NEW SANCTUARY NEEDS YOU!

No one can create sanctuary alone. It takes a community. The vital and varied work of New Sanctuary is done every day by hundreds of volunteers with all kinds of talents and strengths. We always need more volunteers because the work is never done. The government’s unreasoned attacks on immigrants grow and we grow to meet the needs.

Here are links to many of the ways you can help. Pick one. Pick more than one. We’ll provide any needed training. You provide the people power.

  • Pro Se Clinic Training

    Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 01:00 PM
Vanderbilt Hall in New York, NY

New Sanctuary Coalition runs a weekly clinic staffed by non-attorney volunteers and supervised by experienced immigrants rights organizers and immigration lawyers. You do not need prior experience to participate; we will train you. The clinic helps people identify ways to get relief from deportation and detention; access other immigration-related benefits; understand their rights so they can fight their own case; apply for asylum; prepare for court appearances or interviews; and much more.

We're seeing tremendous growth in the number of immigrants  the people we call “friends,” not clients — seeking help and we're looking for new volunteers. Join us for training, and we'll continue training you and supporting you as you help our friends at our weekly clinic.

This training is intended for new AND seasoned volunteers. We will go over important procedures at clinic, basics of asylum, change of venue, FOIA and work permits.

Clinic is on Tuesday evenings from 6-8:30 at NYU law school.

  • Who Benefits from the Internment and Deportation Machine?

    Monday, September 24, 2018 at 06:30 PM
Vanderbilt Hall in New York, NY

In order to dismantle a violent, dehumanizing and unjust system, we need to understand how it works and who benefits from it. The immigration and criminal systems thrive in the shadows, and popular education gives us the weapons to see into the dark corners of their brutality.

This continues a series of trainings on the system of laws that make the caging of immigrants, massive deportations, and ongoing separation of families possible, as well as trainings on who is financially benefiting from the incarceration and deportation machine.

From these trainings we will develop political campaigns to dismantle our current immigration system, and offer a humane alternative that recognizes the dignity of all people and keeps our communities whole.

  • Accompaniment Training

    Monday, October 15, 2018 at 06:00 PM

The Immigration Accompaniment Program helps support families who are going through the immigration process in 3 ways:

    • PROVIDES A SUPPORT STRUCTURE to strengthen those caught in immigration proceedings
    • KEEPS FAMILY MEMBERS INFORMED at every step of the process as their loved ones move forward
    • HOLDS LEGAL OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE for providing accurate information and serving due process

It is a concrete way to extend sanctuary for the most vulnerable among us. Sanctuary is not a physical entity but the spaces wherein all of us can breathe freely and in dignity.

We are building a movement that cares and protects the other, not matter where they are from or who they are. We are opening sanctuary spaces on every block where people can feel safe and welcome.
